  • When Bob Meeks, a cohort of Butch Cassidy, escaped on Christmas Eve 1901, he stole the prison's horse "Old Selam" to make his getaway. Warden C.E. Arney called Selam "one of the best animals in Idaho." Upon his capture, Meeks stated he "knew old Selam, and if anybody could get me to freedom it was he." Warden Arney said, "I am equally glad that we have Selam back. He is a noble animal and it would be a pity to have the horse knocking around among those who would not appreciate his worth." A week after Meeks and Selam returned to the penitentiary, Samuel Bruner escaped on the legendary horse. The guards never found Bruner, but they located Selam six months later grazing six miles away in Swan Falls.
