  • In 1942, Idaho State Penitentiary residents rallied around "Champ," their prized bullfrog that lived in the prison yard's lily pond. Champ sat quietly and waited for sparrows to land for a drink of water. In a flash, he gulped the birds down whole and waited for his next opponent. Champ became a legend among the prison population. They bet anything they could - money, marbles, or chalk - that he could "lick" any other frog in Idaho.
