  • Zipper the cat "oversaw" a team of other cats living in the Idaho State Penitentiary's dining hall, hunting mice and keeping warm atop the steam pipes. Older and larger than the other cats, he often wandered the yard, visiting the prisoners in solitary confinement and approaching the "dead line" around the prison walls with caution. An Eastern Idaho prisoner brought Zipper to the prison at two weeks old in 1922. The Idaho Statesman reported Zipper's death in 1942 due to "old age" after twenty years of prison life.
